For marine biology- and environmental science students, this program is the perfect place to put your knowledge into practise.

What sets the Gili Divers Eco Divemaster program apart

Finding the balance between an exceptional Divemaster internship and an extraordinary conservation program can be challenging, but we dare to say our course is exactly that. And let’s not forget a lot of fun and making friends for life, because this place will become a second home to you.

Head of our Eco Dive department is Bethany, whose knowledge and enthusiasm will even convert the biggest climate change denier into an eco-warrior. On a typical course day (see the example schedule below) she will take you out on a Coral Gardening dive in the morning, followed by a theory lecture about different species of coral. In the afternoon you get pared up with one of the other instructors and help out on a try scuba or open water course.

Because that will make all the difference, the real students you will be helping out with. In Gili Divers there are plenty of courses to assist and plenty of fundives to guide; real hands-on experience, no role play. A great opportunity to share your passion with other divers and create more ocean enthusiasts. During the eco divemaster internship, you will gain seven certifications, this includes the Ocean Quest Coral Propagation course

Bethany

Meet Bethany

Bethany is our in house ecology instructor, with a passion for marine life and environmental sustainability. While visiting Gili Trawangan in 2019, Bethany discovered scuba diving, which fuelled her intrigue into learning more about the underwater world! She changed her career path, received a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and combined this knowledge with her passion for scuba diving!
Bethany became an Ocean Quest Coral Propagation trainer, teaching scuba divers how to propagate and manage coral nurseries to preserve this fragile ecosystem for years to come! Climbing the SSI Pathway, Bethany is now an SSI Ecology speciality Instructor, teaching Marine Ecology, Fish identification, coral identification, turtle ecology, shark ecology and Invertebrate ecology.

With a huge passion for marine life and environmental sustainability, Bethany is on a mission to educate scuba divers on the complexity and importance of marine animals and their ecosystems.
Ovan, Instructor Trainer at Gili Divers

Meet Ovan

Meet our instructor trainer Ovan Sofian, the man with the most infectious laugh off Indonesia. Originally from Sumbawa, Ovan escaped his fathers fishing business in search of adventure. This led him to Gili Trawangan, where he started as a boat captain. He slowly climbed the ladder in the diving industry and guided certified divers around the Gili’s for many years. In 2013 it was time to take the next step, and he became a dive instructor with Gili Divers. After eight years of teaching all over Indonesia and certifying over a thousand students, it was time for the next step; teaching other instructors how to teach. As an instructor trainer, Ovan is able to find that balance between the role as a mentor, and the ability to push instructor candidates to a higher level. When you climb the ladder from a small fishing boat in Sumbawa, to an established and highly respected instructor trainer, this ability almost comes naturally. Ovan will make sure you get all the attention and will practice with you until the late hours if necessary. Because that is what he loves the most; seeing his students grow.

Meet Clem, our Technical Diving Instructor

Originally from France, she started diving in sunny Thailand where she quickly became addicted to the underwater world and started to pursue more advanced diving at greater depth. She became a RAID Deco 50 diver and a full-time open-circuit instructor in 2017.

From there, she expanded her teaching range with numerous specialties, alongside regularly leading fun and challenging technical dives. Over the years, she has gained invaluable experience teaching and diving in a wide variety of environments; from the cold, murky waters of the English Channel to the deep wrecks of the Maltese islands, and the vibrant marine life of Oman.

She joined Gili Divers in 2021 where she has taken on the task of growing a dedicated technical diving department. With a focus on personalised training, her main drive is always to create a safe and supportive teaching environment to encourage all divers to progress toward pushing their limits.

With a strong passion for deep diving and mentoring, she aims to empower students by giving them the confidence to achieve their diving goals. As a JJ-CCR Mod2 Mixed Gas diver, she enjoys exploring deep reefs and has a special love for historical wrecks.
